Oftentimes, when Black history is discussed, the starting point is 1619. This is the year in which the first African slaves were transported to North America. However, the remarkable history of Black people predates the transatlantic slave trade and it dates far back to antiquity. This is why French scholar, C. F. Volney once stated, "Just think that this race of Black men, today our slave and the object of our scorn, is the very race to which we owe our arts, sciences, and even the use of speech" (Diop, 1974/1955, p. 28).
